When the 2017 season started and Colin Kaepernick still wasn’t on an NFL roster, it was obvious to anyone paying attention that his talent and value hadn’t suddenly disappeared over a matter of two seasons — and at the very least, he should’ve had a role as the No. 2 somewhere.

Now his former 49ers teammate and partner in protest, Eric Reid, is facing the same kind of consequences for his activism on and off the field. The 26-year-old safety filed a collusion grievance against the NFL on Wednesday as a result of the lack of interest he’s received on the market as an immensely qualified free agent.

So once again, it is pertinent that we look at the facts and highlight a few of his key career statistics, as well as his productivity relative to the rest of the league in the five seasons since he was selected 18th overall by San Francisco in the 2013 NFL Draft.

When the 49ers fired Jim Harbaugh after the team went 8-8 in 2014, everything predictably took a turn for the worst. They went 5-11 under Jim Tomsula, and then managed to decline further in 2016 when Chip Kelly steered them to a disastrous 2-14 season. Newly minted GM John Lynch hired Kyle Shanahan in 2017, and while their squad struggled until Jimmy Garoppolo arrived, they finished the season strong and managed to eek out a 6-10 record.

Across those three seasons under three different coaches, Reid’s 17 passes defensed in 39 games put him right in the same league as Morgan Burnett (38 games), Devin McCourty (46 games) and Harrison Smith (43 games).

McCourty and Smith are each set to make $8 million in total cash in 2018, and Burnett is set to make $5.25M.

Additionally, Reid’s 156 solo tackles puts him 31st among all safeties from 2015 to 2017. Here’s the company he keeps in that department:

In 2017, Reid’s 66 total tackles on the season were the third most among San Francisco 49ers defenders, behind cornerback Dontae Johnson (76) and linebacker Reuben Foster (72). Enter product key windows 7. Reid was also one of three players to nab two interceptions on the season — the team high.

Pro Football Focus even gave him the game ball in the 49ers final showing of the 2017 season for his performance against the rival Los Angeles Rams.

So even over an objectively bad stretch for a wayward team with very little direction and just 13 wins in three seasons, Reid’s production has been more than up to snuff. Now let’s take a look back at how well he played under Jim Harbaugh, and how his production compared to the field from 2013-2014.

Over his first two seasons, Reid was on par with the best safeties in the the NFL. In other words, over his first five seasons as a pro, Reid proved that he has the potential to play exceptionally on a good team guided by a competent coach and he is a decent player and a valuable member of the defense even when the team is bad.

None of this is to say that Reid should be paid like he’s Earl Thomas or Malcolm Jenkins, or that these individual stats don’t require further context if they’re going to be used in deciding exactly what type of role he would play on another team. It is meant to illustrate one major point, which is that he is very clearly an NFL-caliber safety.

Reid is a young and relatively healthy former first-round draft pick with a high ceiling and veteran leadership skills who can play at both free and strong safety and has the size and ability to move to linebacker when needed.

If anything, Reid’s case for collusion is even stronger than Kaepernick’s because there are far more roster spots to be filled at the safety position than there are at quarterback. Put simply: there’s just no readily-apparent football-related reason for Reid not to be on 53-man roster at the start of the 2018 season.
