Apple Quicktime Mpeg 2 Playback Component Free Download For Windows
I am having issues with Windows Media Player playing back mpeg-2 (.mpg) encoded files. I am a video producer and render mpeg-2 (.mpg) files for broadcast using Adobe Media Encoder. Some of the files I render will not play all the way through smoothly in Windows Media Player, they will have a short break/freeze/whatever you wanna call it. In my last test of 18 renders, 9 at a constant bit rate and 9 at a variable bit rate, I had 4 files that would have this short freeze on playback in Media Player. I need to play them back before sending them out to TV stations to make sure the files are good. When I play the files a second time in Media Player, the freeze will be in the same spot. When I encode with Windows Media Encoder, the freeze gets encoded into the wmv file (I send wmv for client approval). So I have a feeling it has something to do with how Windows Media is treating the file.

Now, when I encode that same mpg file (the one that won't play smoothly in Windows Media Player) into Adobe Media Encoder to a wmv for Windows, it encodes the file just fine.
I updated my VLC Player from VideoLAN and that will play the mpeg-2 (mpg) files just fine.
I can import the mpeg-2 (mpg) files into Adobe Premiere Pro and play them fine. So, now to the question.... Why is Windows Media Player having a difficult time with these files? Is there a problem with the mpeg-2 playback component in Windows?
Hope this makes sense. Thanks! TC
